Kolkata is a very large city, area wise as
well as population wise. The city, which constitutes the capital of
West Bengal state, is situated on the eastern banks of River
Hooghly. The city has been divided into different topographical
regions, for the sake of clear understanding of its various
resources. The city as such can be thought of comprising of five
geographical units, that is east, west, north, south and central
Kolkata , plus the adjoining regions. The regions allocated in each
unit are: East Kolkata - Baguiati, Salt Lake City, Sealdah and
Tangra; West Kolkata - Behala, Garden Reach and Khidirpur; North
Kolkata - Dakshineswar, Dum Dum, Lake Town, Maniktala, Nager Bazar,
Shobha Bazar, Shyam Bazar and Tala; South Kolkata - Alipur,
Baliganja, Gariya, Jadavpur, Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Kasba and
Taliganja; Central Kolkata - BBD Bagh, Entali and Esplanade. Some of
the adjoining regions of Kolkata city include Howrah, Hooghly, North
24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Nadia.
There is a vast network of interlinking roads, railways, subways
and water transportation that facilitate the accessibility means in
the city. The Kolkata metro runs from the Dum Dum in the north to
Tollygunge in the South. The areas or townships have still smaller
roads and routes that enable the traffic flow within them. Most of
the areas are self sufficient and have establishments like hotels,
schools and colleges, medical agencies, markets, etc.
