Alipur suburbs is situated within the southern precincts of Kolkata city. Alipur constitutes the headquarters of the South 24 Parganas. Alipur suburbs houses many tourist attractions. The Alipur Zoo and National Library are two popular tourist attractions in the region. Alipur Zoo or Zoological Gardens is one of the best zoological gardens in India. The zoo is home to a number of species, including tigers, elephants, giraffes, leopards, etc.

The National Library, located within the premises of Alipur, is the India's largest library. The site of the library, which is Belvedere House bears historical importance. Belvedere House used to be the residential quarters of the British Lieutenant Governor. The place today contains the best collection of books throughout India.

Alipur is also known for a number of industries that are grounded on its lands. Major industries in the region include printing and book binding industry, cement manufacture, oilseed milling and general engineering works industry. The area also houses a number of schools, hospitals and other establishments.

  • The nearest subway station is the Jatindas Park Station, a couple of kolimetres to the east of the region.
