BBD Bagh continues to be one of the posh areas of Kolkata city. BBD Bagh used to be the seat of British Power and was formerly called Dalhousie Square. The locality observed the name change after the siege of British Writer's Building by three brothers, Binoy, Badal and Dinesh. BBD as such stands for the initials of the three brothers. The building established by the British in the year 1880 still provides its services with a new crew, all those employed by the local government. The Writer's Building and the General Post Office of British era still exist as landmarks in BBD Bagh territory.

The BBD Bagh is situated on the east bank of river Hooghly and constitutes the commercial hub of the city center. The historical buidings constructed during British rule coupled with modern Indian establishments makes the place as one of the important tourist destinations. The northern side of the BBD Bagh houses the Writer's Building. The eastern part is occupied by various commercial houses and the West Bengal Tourism Bureau. The Governor's residence, Raj Bhavan, lines up the northern frontier. The other important institutes in the area include State Legislative Assembly, Calcutta High Court and General Post Office. The place is also provided with the oldest Church of Kolkata, St John's Cathedral.
