The eastern part of the Kolkata city is dominated by the
township of Salt Lake City. The region is characterized by salt
lakes and well planned residential blocks. The areas that fall in
the eastern region include Salt Lake City, Baguiati, Sealdah and
Tangra. Salt Lake City occupies great territorial area and is
evolving into an independent and self sufficient city. This part of
the city is divided into regular blocks and houses most of the
attractions in the region.
The eastern part of the city is provided with attractions like
major railway station (Sealdah Railway Station), Railway Museum,
amusement parks, stadium (the largest stadium of India), wetlands
(habitat for hundreds of rare birds), the China town and renowned
institutes like Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Variable Energy
Cyclotron and S N Bose Institute. The eastern city suburbs have many
established shopping centres and health care units. Railways and
roadways provide the means of accessibility into the region. The
Satin Sen Sarani road, that bifurcates into Nazrul Islam Avenue and
Canal Circular Road, constitute the major road links in the region.
