Garden Reach, the suburbs of Kolkata city lie in the western
region and on the banks of Hugli River. Garden Reach is an important
station in the city and houses the headquarters of South Eastern
Railways. The region has a number of wetland floors in its
territory. Garden Reach used to be the dwelling place of various
princes. The place, somewhere in middle ages, was occupied by the
rich merchant princes and their wealthy associates.
Garden Reach lies close to the southern banks of the river and at
comparably lesser altitude. The region as such is replete with water
bodies. Due to the close proximity of the region to the river, that
eventually terminates in the Bay of Bengal, it is helpful for the
navigation and harboring of the ships. The popular Kidderpore docks
are located in the precincts of Garden Reach.
Garden Reach Ship Building and Engineering is one of the major
establishments in the region. This government undertaking has served
for more than 80 years (origins 1919) in the field of ship building.
The region has a number of other establishments and important
government offices. The South Eastern Railway Audit Office and South
Eastern Railway Traffics Audit Office unctions from the township.
Accessibility
- Garden Reach that lies towards the west of Kolkata is about 8
kms far from the center of the city. The Garden Reach Road is
connected to the Diamond Harbour Road, the latter providing the
primary means to access the city.
- Behala Airport, which is the domestic airport of the city is
only 6 kms away and towards the south-west of Garden Reach. The
international airport on the other hand is 17 kms away and lies
towards the north-east of the region.
