The North 24 Parganas exist as independent districts located
to the north-east of Kolkata city. The North 24 Parganas are about
30 kms far from the city. The outskirts comprise of many important
tourist places. The township is connected by roads and railways to
Kolkata city. Some important areas in the township include Barasat,
Barrackpore, Basirhat, Bidhan Nagar, etc. These areas house Old
Settlements of European Traders and Gandhi Ghat.

to the presence of surplus of military barracks during British rule
