The Salt lake City or Bidhan Nagar is one of the developed
centres in the city of Kolkata. Salt Lake City is quite a large
township and sometimes stands as an independent city located within
Kolkata. Salt Lake City consists of a planned township with a number
of blocks. Salt Lake City was founded in the year 1962. The
government in the said year hired a Yugoslavian firm to fill in the
long existing swamps with the sand water. After a period of four
decades the region has evolved into a modern commercial hub with all
the variables of modernity and self sufficiency.
The planned city is spread in a way that it contains a hexagonal
park in the center and the adjoining blocks surrounding it. The
Keshtopur Canal, an offshoot of the river Hooghly runs across the
three sides of Salt Lake City. The wet lands of Salt Lake City
provides habitat to some exotic migratory and resident birds. The
place for years has witnessed the harmony between the birds and
humans population dwelling at the same place.
Salt Lake City is provided with all means of amusement and
recreation. The city has the largest stadium of India, amusement
park, shopping malls, sports training centre and more. The region is
also considered as a leading IT sector in the state. Some reputed
institutes like Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Variable Energy
Cyclotron and S N Bose Institute are located in the premises of the
Salt Lake City.
Accessibility
- The subway and railways do not provide any services in the
Salt Lake City region. Accessibility to the region is provided
by the roadways. Nazrul Islam Avenue and Canal Road link it with
other Kolkata city premises. Buses and taxis are the easiest
modes f transportation.
- The Dum Dum Airport (International) lies to the north-west of
Salt Lake City and is about 4 kms far. Domestic airport,
however, lies to the south-east and is about 24 kms away from
the region.
