Southern Kolkata primarily constitutes a residential area. The
southern premises of the city consist of many planned townships and
areas like Alipur, Baliganj, Jodhpur Park, Golf Green and Lake Green
Gardens. The southern regions are linked to those of the central and
eastern regions by well established network of roads. The region
holds the southern terminal of the subway at Tollygunge. The
important areas in the south include Alipur, Baliganja, Gariya,
Jadavpur, Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Kasba and Taliganja.
The southern regions contain some of the renowned learning centres
of the city. There are also a number of lakes, parks, stadia and
clubs in this region. National Library, Zoological Garden, Birla
Industrial and Technological Museum, Indian Association for the
Cultivation of Sciences, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Tollygunge Golf
Club, Kali Temple, etc., are some of the important tourist places in
the southern precincts of the city. The area also has a flourishing
number of shopping complexes. Dakhinapan Commercial Complex is the
latest happening place in the city.
