About the Stadium :
Venue for the International Table-tennis Tournament in the
seventies, Netaji Indoor Stadium is a fully air-conditioned indoor
stadium of world standards.
The stadium was constructed with the intention of hosting the World
Table Tennis Championship. This was founded in 1975 and inaugurated
by Siddharta Sankar Roy, former Chief Minister of West Bengal, for
indoor games and sports like Table Tennis, Basket Ball, Volley Ball,
Badminton etc. Cultural Functions and different programmes are also
held here.
On 14th September, 1997, Indoor Stadium was greatly honoured as the
last rites of Mother Teresa was conducted here. The Nobel Lomreate
Sri Amartya Sen was given State Reception by the Goverment of West
Bengal in this stadium on 27th December, 1998.
Netaji Indoor Stadium is build up of 68 Nos. R.C.C. pre-cast two
hinged portals - pin jointed at the foundation. The roof-system
contains of 550 mm* 220 MM deep pre-cast of elements ('T' - Slab)
resting at their ends on the tapered steel-truss of the portals. The
vertical gap of 2.80 M between the upper and lower roof is covered
with vertical flat type lowers all around which are covered from
outside by asbestos sheet. The entire roofing is covered with 50 mm
thick thermocol for thermal insulation overlaid with tarfelt for
water proofing.
Total land area of the stadium is around 20,553 sq.mts. The wooden
floor of the stadium is 76 mts * 28 mts.(2128 sq.mts). The wooden
floor of the stadium is used as the playing arena. Today, this
Indoor Stadium is a popular venue not only for indoor sports,but
also for cultural fundctions and different programmes. During such
cultural functions, seating arrangements are also provided in the
wooden floor where approximately 2000 chairs can be laid. The
stadium also boasts press room, conference hall, telex room, dining
hall etc. Total capacity of the Stadium is almost 1,20,000.
