Intro
Sunderbans constitutes a part of the largest delta in the world.
The three major rivers of the Eastern India, Ganga, Brahmaputra and
Meghna slow down towards the lower Gangetic Plains, producing the
swamps of Sunderbans. The region is located at a distance of about
166 kms from the Kolkata city. Sunderbans is a renowned place for a
variety of reasons. The region consists of the largest mangrove
forests in the world, the largest delta in the world and is the only
place where the famous wild cat that is Royal Bengal Tiger, can be
seen dipping in the water. The region houses one of the popular
animal reserves of India, Sunderbans. The place was acknowledged and
given the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO and the year was
1997. The alluring territorial plains of Sunderbans is criss crossed
with small water bodies that provide habitat to some of the exotic
birds. To experience the real feeling, the real adventure, one has
walk his way through the swamps, estuaries, tigers, crocodiles and
even sharks.
Attractions
To start with we have the ferocious man-eater Royal Bengal Tiger in
Sunderbans. The ferocious cat can be expected anywhere that is in
the swamps, bushes or doing a swimming exercise in one of the
estuaries. The hunter comes after the hunted and the hunted at
Sunderbans constitute the spotted deer or Cheetal. The Cheetals are
known to be the second fastest land animals, the fastest being the
Cheetah. The estuaries are also infested with the deadly crocodiles
and sharks.
The mangrove forests hold the hidden treasure in the form of bird
population that breed here. Some rare bird species found in the
region include Swamp Patridge, Brown-winged Kingfisher, Grey Headed
Lapwing, Palass Fish Eagle and Mangrove Whistler.
Accessibility
The popular route to reach Sunderbans lies towards the South East
of Kolkata. The bus route takes up to the region of Sonakhali. From
Sonakhali are available boats to Basanti. From Basanti it takes
about an hour to reach the destination.
The South Western route goes through Diamond Harbour into the
region of Kakdwip and Namkhana. The boat ride from these places
takes into the region.
Accommodation
Sajnekhali Tourist Lodge is the prime accommodation provider. There
are few other resorts located in the Gosaba and Bali Islands, that
provide the lodging and catering facilities.
